Brief outline

What is International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme?
The IB Diploma Programme prepares students aged 16 to 19, for success in higher education and to be active participants in a global society. It is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, for success at university and life beyond. It has been designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students. The programme has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities. The Diploma Programme prepares students for effective participation in a rapidly evolving and increasingly global society. They acquire breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding studying courses from six subject groups. They study at least two languages and increase understanding of cultures, including their own.

They make connections across traditional academic disciplines and explore the nature of knowledge through the programme’s unique theory of knowledge course.

They undertake in-depth research into an area of interest through the lens of one or more academic disciplines in the extended essay. They enhance their personal and interpersonal development through creativity, action and service.

The curriculum is made up of the DP core and six subject groups.

IB Diploma at MCTM

The school offers the following courses:
Group 1 : English Literature
Group 2 : French Ab initio/ French B / Tamil B/Hindi B
Group 3 : Economics/ Business Management / Psychology/ Digital society / ESS
Group 4 : Physics / Chemistry / Biology/ Computer Science / ESS
Group 5 : Mathematics : Analysis and Approaches HL / SL, 
 Mathematics : Applications and Interpretations HL / SL
Group 6 : Visual Arts

Pupils may select a minimum of 6 subjects, opting for one subject each from Groups I to V and one more from Group VI, or in place of that, an additional subject from either Group III or Group IV to qualify for the IB Diploma certification.

External Assessment Examinations form the basis of the assessment for most courses which provide high levels of objectivity and reliability. These include:
essays
structured problems
short-response questions
data-response questions
text-response questions
case-study questions
multiple-choice questions

Internal Assessment is also used for most courses. These include:
oral work in languages
laboratory work in the sciences
investigations in mathematics, sciences and social sciences
portfolio for visual arts

In addition, students are required to take a course in Theory of Knowledge (ToK) – a course which critically analyses knowledge claims from different disciplines.

The students are expected to work with commitment fulfilling the objectives over a period of 18 months during the course period of 2 years in Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS).
Creativity: arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
Activity: physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing academic work in the Diploma Programme.
Service: an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student. The rights, dignity and autonomy of all those involved are respected.

Philosophy of CAS: CAS enables the students to enhance their personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning
To develop their research skills, the students write a Research Paper (Extended Essay) on a topic of their interest evaluated by external examiners. Experts on the relevant subjects supervise the Extended Essay project under the leadership of the Diploma Programme Coordinator. For more details visit www.ibo.org
